PRIVATE DOG TRAINING
LESSONS

One-on-one lessons where you learn alongside your dog — because the best-trained dog in Texas still needs a trained owner.

Off Leash K9 Training Houston offers private one-on-one lessons — Basic Obedience (4 lessons, $650) and Basic & Advanced (8 lessons, $1,000) — where you and your dog train together with a professional. Best for owners who want to build the handling skills themselves. Every program starts with a free evaluation, and Affirm financing is available.

WHY PRIVATE LESSONS?

Group classes teach a generic curriculum at a pace set for eight dogs, in a room full of distractions you can't control. Private lessons are the opposite: 100% of a professional trainer's attention on your dog, your household, and your actual problems. Door-bolting when the Amazon driver knocks? Counter-surfing in an open-concept kitchen? Dragging you down the sidewalk toward every dog in the neighborhood? We work the specific issue in the specific context where it happens — not a classroom approximation of it.

But the bigger reason Houston families choose lessons is this: you become the trainer. In board & train, we train your dog full-time and transfer the skills to you at graduation. In private lessons, you build those skills rep by rep from day one — leash mechanics, marker timing, how to reward, when to correct, how to read your dog's arousal before it tips over. Dog training is 20% training the dog and 80% training the human on the other end of the leash. Owners who go through lessons keep results the longest, because they didn't inherit the skills — they earned them.

WHAT A LESSON ACTUALLY LOOKS LIKE

MINUTES 0–10

Review & diagnose

Your trainer watches you handle the dog on last week's homework — because the gap between "it works for the trainer" and "it works for me" is exactly what private lessons exist to close.

MINUTES 10–35

New skill, three ways

The trainer demonstrates with your dog, then coaches you through it, then adds the distraction layer. Every command is taught to you as mechanics: hand position, leash pressure, marker timing, release.

MINUTES 35–50

Real-world application

The skill goes into your actual problem context — the front door, the sidewalk, the kitchen — so it's trained where it's needed, not just where it's convenient.

AFTER

Written homework

You leave every session with exact daily homework: which commands, how many reps, which distractions to add, and what "good enough to progress" looks like. 10–15 focused minutes a day between lessons is what sets your pace.

YOUR OPTIONS

📘

BASIC OBEDIENCE — $650

4 private lessons. Come, sit, down, place, loose-leash walking, heel, and "off" — the complete daily-life command set, taught to you and your dog together. The right starting point for most dogs over 5 months.

🎓

BASIC & ADVANCED — $1,000

8 private lessons. Everything in Basic plus advanced off-leash work and distraction proofing — the full path to a dog that listens at the park, on the trail, and around other dogs.

LESSONS OR BOARD & TRAIN?

The honest decision rule we give every family at the evaluation: more time than urgency → lessons. More urgency than time → board & train. If you can genuinely invest 10–15 minutes a day and you want the deepest handler skills, lessons deliver the most durable result per dollar. If work, kids, and a Houston commute mean the daily reps won't happen — or the problem is escalating — immersion gets a professional's hands on the dog every single day, then transfers the finished skills to you. Many families combine both: board & train for the heavy lifting, a lesson package after to sharpen their own handling.

Two honest exceptions: puppies under 5 months belong in the Puppy Board & Train, where the critical socialization window drives the curriculum. And serious behavioral casesreactivity that's escalating, aggression, bite history — usually need immersion, because weekly one-hour touchpoints can't control enough variables. Your free evaluation sorts this in 30 minutes. Full program comparison in the 2026 Houston cost guide and on our pricing page.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How much are private dog training lessons in Houston?

Off Leash K9 Training Houston's private lessons run $650 for the 4-lesson Basic Obedience package and $1,000 for the 8-lesson Basic & Advanced package. Every dog starts with a free evaluation, and Affirm financing is available. Houston private lessons elsewhere typically range $100–$250 per session.

Are private lessons better than board and train?

They solve different problems. Private lessons teach YOU the handling skills rep by rep — best when you can practice 10–15 minutes daily. Board and train immerses your dog with a professional full-time — best for busy households, escalating problems, or serious behavioral cases. Many families combine both.

How many lessons does my dog need?

Most dogs achieve reliable daily-life obedience in the 4-lesson Basic package; dogs headed for off-leash reliability need the 8-lesson Basic & Advanced track. Your practice between lessons sets the pace — we give exact written homework after every session.

What happens in the first private lesson?

Your trainer evaluates how you and your dog currently communicate, teaches the marker system and leash mechanics that everything else builds on, starts the first commands, and sends you home with specific daily homework. From lesson one, you are the one handling the dog.

Can private lessons fix pulling on the leash?

Yes — loose-leash walking and heel are core Basic Obedience skills, and pulling is one of the most common problems we fix. Because you learn the leash mechanics yourself, the fix holds on every walk, not just the ones the trainer attends.

What if my dog has aggression or reactivity issues?

Escalating reactivity, aggression, and bite-history cases usually need more than weekly lessons — immersion lets us control every exposure while new habits build. Start with the free evaluation and we'll tell you honestly whether lessons, board and train, or a combination fits your dog.
