DOG TRAINING WEST U & BELLAIRE, TX

West U bans dogs from its listed parks and has no dog park. Bellaire allows leashed dogs in two parks and has one fenced off-leash area. In neighborhoods this tight, your dog's manners on the sidewalk are its whole public life.

Off Leash K9 Training Houston trains dogs from West University Place and Bellaire at its facility at 12115 Fawnview Dr in NW Houston, about 26 miles from both cities and roughly 40 minutes with no traffic by the 610 West Loop, US 290 and SH 249. Choose a 2-week board and train (two trips: drop-off and the go-home session) or private lessons at the facility; there is no in-home training. The business is owned by Master Trainer Justin Rie, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, and rated 4.8 stars across 299 Google reviews.

TWO SMALL CITIES, STRICT DOG RULES

West University Place (2.00 square miles, 14,955 people in 2020) and Bellaire (3.60 square miles, 17,202 people) are separate cities inside Houston, each with its own animal code. The 2020 Census put West U at about 7,460 people per square mile and Bellaire at about 4,780.

  • West U parks are off limits to dogs. Code Sec. 14-16, as amended in April 2025, bans animals from Judson, Wier, Whitt Johnson, Huffington, Friends, Jennie Elizabeth Hughes and Liberty Hill parks, the Recreation Center, and the inner area of Colonial Park (westutx.gov/parks).
  • West U leash law has a control test. A dog on a leash that is not controlled well enough to keep it from disturbing others still counts as "at large" (Sec. 14-78), and invisible electric fences do not count as a secure enclosure (West U leash law).
  • West U registration and limits: every dog needs city registration and permanent ID such as a tag or microchip (Sec. 14-80), rabies vaccination with a tag (Sec. 14-84), and no more than 3 dogs, 3 cats or 4 animals in total per home (Sec. 14-72).
  • Bellaire leash and license: a leash, chain or cord no longer than 10 feet (Secs. 6-6, 6-42), a free annual dog license for dogs over 4 months (Sec. 6-38), and a yearly rabies shot (Sec. 6-8) (Bellaire Code).
  • Bellaire parks since November 2025: Ordinance 25-107 allows leashed dogs only in Paseo Park and Vic Driscoll Park; walking dogs in other city parks needs an event permit.
  • Both cities: pick up after your dog everywhere (West U Sec. 14-77, Bellaire Sec. 6-44), and barking that disturbs neighbors is prohibited. In West U, animal control can attach conditions such as training to a barking dog's registration (Sec. 14-82).

WHERE YOUR DOG CAN GO

With so few dog-friendly parks, it helps to know exactly where the yes is:

WEST U

Your own sidewalks

West U has no dog park and bans dogs from its listed parks, so neighborhood sidewalks are where your dog lives its public life. With about 7,460 people per square mile, a dog that walks politely past strollers, yard crews and other dogs makes daily life easier for everyone.

THE DRIVE TO OUR FACILITY

Starting pointDistanceTimeMain roads
West University Place25.7 mi~40 minUS 59/I-69, 610 West Loop, US 290, SH 249
Bellaire25.7 mi~38 min610 West Loop, US 290, SH 249

Estimates from the OSRM route planner with no traffic, from Census center points. Rush-hour traffic on 610 and US 290 can add significant time.

If a weekly drive across town is hard, a board and train needs only two trips. If you want to learn every technique yourself, private lessons at the facility build your handling step by step.

WHAT INNER-LOOP DOGS NEED MOST

Leash manners that pass the control test

West U expects a leashed dog to be under enough control not to disturb others. Loose-leash walking, a reliable sit at the curb and a "leave it" for other dogs are the core of that.

Real boundaries, not invisible fences

West U animal control reports picking up many dogs wearing electric-fence collars. Doorway manners and a solid recall protect a dog better than a buried wire.

Quiet in close quarters

On small lots, barking carries. Settle and crate routines help, and in West U a barking complaint can lead to conditions on your dog's registration.

Ready to leave in a storm

Hurricane Harvey flooded about 2,318 structures in Bellaire and 116 homes in West U. A dog that crates calmly and travels well is easier to move fast.

WEST U AND BELLAIRE QUESTIONS

Can I take my dog to parks in West University Place?

Not to the listed city parks. West U Code Sec. 14-16 bans animals from parks such as Judson, Wier, Whitt Johnson, Huffington and the inner area of Colonial Park, and the city has no dog park. Neighborhood sidewalks are where West U dogs walk, which is why Off Leash K9 Training Houston focuses on leash manners.

Where can dogs go off leash in Bellaire?

Only inside Officer Lucy Dog Park in Lafayette Park, 4337 Lafayette, open 5 am to 9:30 pm. Since November 2025, Bellaire allows leashed dogs in Paseo Park and Vic Driscoll Park; other city parks need an event permit to walk dogs.

How far is Off Leash K9 Training Houston from West U and Bellaire?

About 26 miles from both cities, roughly 40 minutes with no traffic by the 610 West Loop, US 290 and SH 249. Off Leash K9 Training Houston trains at 12115 Fawnview Dr in NW Houston.

Do you train in homes in West University Place or Bellaire?

No. Off Leash K9 Training Houston trains only at its NW Houston facility. Families come in for private lessons or drop off for a 2-week board and train, which takes two trips: drop-off and the go-home session.

Does West U accept invisible fences as containment?

No. West U says electronic fences are not a secure enclosure, and its animal control has picked up many dogs wearing e-fence collars. A dog outside a real enclosure must be on a leash held by someone who can control it.
